Made it to Cairns

Maybe it’s because I just spent so much time with friends and family in the last two weeks, but it feels very odd being on my own. Or maybe that’s just not enough sleep, the bit of cold left in my sinuses (plus medicine), and staying in a hostel for the first time. Regardless, I’ve made it to Cairns, have a bed, have walked around a found a few souvenirs for myself, had some food, and am about ready to sleep early. I’m decidedly tired and my snorkeling trip leaves from the pier tomorrow at 8am, so I need to be up, sunscreened, dressed, and fed to get over there on time.

But back to today! Michelle valiantly fought the morning Brisbane traffic to get me to the airport. Wow is traveling domestic here so much more pleasant! I could bring all of my toiletries, regardless of how many ounces they are, and they didn’t check my ID the whole time. Easy peasy! The flight also was easy, just over 2 hours. I sat next to two guys from Chicago, funnily enough. Since then I’ve heard German, French, and British and Australian accents. That’s not even including the languages I couldn’t quite catch.

Once I got checked into my hostel (it’s tidy enough, and thankfully not too crowded to be annoying. Hope that stays true through the night!) I began to walk around the town a bit. My place is directly across the street from the boardwalk and ocean, and just next to the public swimming lagoon, and near the pier. There’s tons of restaurants and shops nearby and it’s been fun peeking into them all. I also found a grocery store, which is awesome because I can buy things like food, water, and sunscreen and not feel gouged.

Anyway, it’s a lovely view walking around, but there’s not much more to report at this point. I’m quite tired and saving up my energy for tomorrow! Here’s a few shots, though:

Okay, enough of the free wireless at McDonald's!
